FARM: Dukunde Kawa cooperative

BEHIND THE PRODUCTION
Rwanda’s Nkara station, part of the Musasa Dukunde Kawa cooperative, has been a transformative force in local coffee farming. Established in 2007 with the profits of earlier stations, this cooperative not only brought economic benefits but also helped elevate the quality of coffee production. The Musasa cooperative plays a vital role in supporting small-scale farmers who own less than a quarter of a hectare each, growing a limited number of coffee trees.

By centralizing processing at the washing station, these farmers are able to focus on quality rather than bulk, making the most of Rwanda’s shift from quantity-driven to quality-oriented production methods. This approach has been essential in positioning Rwandan coffee in the global specialty market.
LOCATION
The Musasa Nkara Washing Station is located in the Ruli Sector of the Gakenke District in Rwanda's Northern Province, sitting at an altitude of 1,800 to 2,000 meters. This mountainous region is known for its high altitudes, cool temperatures, and fertile volcanic soils, which provide ideal conditions for growing coffee.

Nkara is the third station built by the Musasa Dukunde Kawa cooperative, and it continues to empower local farmers by providing access to specialty markets. The region’s unique terroir, along with careful processing methods, contributes to the distinctive flavor profile of this coffee.

Rwanda Nkara 1904 arrived to our roastery via EL CAFÉ, a company established in 2000 by Vasileios G. Anastasopoulos that is solely concerned in the coffee producing countries with discovering new coffee varieties on special farms.

Since then they supplie most of the largest coffee producing companies in Greece, by remaining as a dedicated green coffee import and trading company.

This coffee is made from the Red Bourbon variety, a traditional and beloved coffee cultivar known for its sweet and balanced flavors. This method enhances the clarity of flavors, allowing the bright citrus and berry notes to shine while maintaining a clean, crisp finish.
