FARM: Reko washing station

BEHIND THE PRODUCTION
In the heart of the Yirgacheffe region, the Kochere district is renowned for producing some of Ethiopia's finest coffees. Smallholder farmers, cultivating plots averaging less than five hectares, employ traditional methods passed down through generations.

These farmers deliver ripe cherries to the Reko washing station, where meticulous processing ensures the preservation of the beans' inherent qualities. The natural processing method involves drying the whole cherries on raised beds, allowing the beans to absorb the fruit's sugars, resulting in a complex and fruity profile.
LOCATION
Kochere is situated in the Gedeo Zone of southern Ethiopia, within the broader Yirgacheffe coffee-growing area. The region's high altitudes, ranging from 1,900 to 2,200 meters above sea level, combined with fertile, iron-rich soils and a temperate climate, create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. The unique terroir imparts distinctive floral and fruity notes to the coffee, making Yirgacheffe coffees highly sought after worldwide.

Ethiopia Rekuse Kochere Gr1 arrived to our roastery via EL CAFÉ, a company established in 2000 by Vasileios G. Anastasopoulos that is solely concerned in the coffee producing countries with discovering new coffee varieties on special farms.

Since then they supplie most of the largest coffee producing companies in Greece, by remaining as a dedicated green coffee import and trading company.

After selective handpicking, ripe cherries are delivered to the Reko washing station. The natural processing method involves drying the whole cherries on raised beds for approximately 15 to 17 days.

During this period, the cherries are regularly turned to ensure even drying and prevent mold development. This meticulous process allows the beans to develop their characteristic fruity and floral notes, resulting in a vibrant and complex cup profile.
